The Anchor is our local pub in Shapwick. Shapwick is a village of only about 190 residents in the East of Dorset, on the beautiful River Stour. Situated at the southern end of the magical Cranborne Chase this has been an ideal stop off for hunters back to the time of King John.
 The area is steeped in history. Beautiful and peaceful now, back in Roman times and before this would have been a very busy area. Finds on the huge hill fort, up the road at Badbury Rings, include a mint making coins for the Durotrigean people that inhabited the area before the Romans arrived in 43AD.

Badbury Rings is situated at the cross of two Roman roads, The Ackling Dyke between Dorchester and Old Sarum (Salisbury), and another between Bath and Hamworthy (Poole). Badbury Rings has also been linked to King Arthur as the possible site of "Badon".

St Bartholomew's Church
St Bartholomew's Church is situated just down the road from the Anchor on the edge of the beautiful River Stour. It has a Norman arch and a 14th century tower. In 1983 the church was used in the filming of an episode of Dr Who. |
